Carl Van Vechten was born in 1880 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He became a New York critic and novelist and an enthusiastic champion of the Harlem Renaissance, promoting Black writers and artists to wider audiences.
Later he took up portrait photography, creating an immense archive of images of 20th-century cultural figures — from Langston Hughes and Bessie Smith to countless authors and performers.
Van Vechten's photographs and advocacy preserved a generation of American cultural history. His papers and images are held at major libraries, and his Iowa roots trace to Cedar Rapids.
He remains a significant, if debated, figure in American arts.
