The story

How it began

Paul Engle was born on October 12, 1908, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and became a celebrated poet. For more than two decades he directed the Iowa Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa.

He turned the Workshop into the most influential creative-writing program in the country, then co-founded the International Writing Program to bring writers from around the world to Iowa City.
