Roy J. Carver was born in 1909 in Iowa and built his fortune in Muscatine, founding Carver Pump during World War II and later Bandag, a tire-retreading company that grew into a global business.
He became one of Iowa's most generous philanthropists, giving extensively to education and medicine before his death in 1981.
Carver's philanthropy left his name across Iowa institutions — the University of Iowa's Carver-Hawkeye Arena and Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, and the Carver Charitable Trust that still funds education and research.
He turned Muscatine manufacturing into a lasting legacy of giving.
