His father (surname Shank) settled the family farm, died 1882, was a substantial farmer and United Brethren member.
Father's children were Daniel, Mary, John, Samuel, Susannah, George, Jacob, Henry, Julia A. (died age 4), Eliza, Catherine and Elizabeth.
