Worked in the mines from an early age.
Father was a miner who came to America ~1848, lived in Pittsburg, PA, then Youngstown, OH (managed a blast furnace), and drowned crossing the Mahoning river in 1852.
Mother resided in Deerfield.
Married Catherine Williams Nov 22, 1868.
Daughter Elmira died Sept 27, 1885, aged 1 year 8 months.
